Examining the Importance of Chinese Mathematics

Examining the Importance of Chinese Mathematics

Chinese mathematics has long been a source of fascination for mathematicians and the general public alike. While Chinese mathematics has an ancient and distant history, it has in recent times become a subject of growing importance in the academic world. This article will explore the development, impact and importance of Chinese mathematics and how it has shaped the way we do mathematics today.

Chinese mathematics began to develop during the Zhou dynasty in the 11th century BC. Chinese mathematics has a long and rich history, leading up to the famous mathematician and philosopher Laozi, who was credited with solving numerous problems such as the “Pillar Problem”, as well as inventing the abacus - a form of calculation based on sliding beads. During the Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD) a wide variety of mathematical techniques were developed and the works of Laozi and the philosopher Zhuangzi gained widespread recognition. The importance of Chinese mathematics increased considerably over the centuries. By the 7th century AD, the works of Chinese mathematicians such as Li Chunfeng (602-670 AD), a court astronomer and mathematician, and Zhang Heng (78-139 AD), a geographer, producer of scientific instruments and inventor of the seismoscope, were widely studied and respected throughout the world. It was due to the efforts of these mathematicians that various aspects of mathematics such as the theory of numbers and geometry were widely used in the Chinese Empire.

The impact of Chinese mathematics on the world is immense. For example, the abacus, which was invented during the Han Dynasty, is still widely used in parts of Asia and is taught as an educational tool in many schools; Chinese calculations involving fractions continue to be used in various aspects of life such as in banking and finance; while similar fractional calculations were developed in the West in the 16th century AD, they were based on the existing Chinese models.

Besides its applications in everyday life, Chinese mathematics has also had a major influence on the development of mathematics in the West. Western mathematicians such as Fibonacci (c. 1170-c.1250 AD), the Italian mathematician and founder of the Fibonacci sequence, were strongly influenced by Chinese mathematics and used some of its principles in their works. In addition, the Chinese system of writing numbers using Arabic numerals (zero to nine) played a major role in the spread of mathematics around the world.

The importance of Chinese mathematics to the world today cannot be overstated. Its contributions to various aspects of everyday life, as well as its influence on the development of mathematics in the West are invaluable. Its impact even extends to fields such as cryptography, where the use of Chinese mathematics can be seen in the process of creating secure banking systems and other widely used forms of encryption.

What is the importance of Chinese mathematics to the world, then? Its contributions to various aspects of everyday life, as well as its influence on the development of mathematics in the West, are truly remarkable and its impact can still be seen today. Chinese mathematics has truly been a powerful force in the development of mathematics, and its importance should be acknowledged and celebrated in the field of mathematics.
