Examining the Scientific and Technological Achievements of Ancient China
From complex agricultural systems to gunpowder and papermaking, the people and cultures of Ancient China were responsible for some of the world’s most iconic inventions and technological achievements. But just what were these developments and how did they shape the world of tomorrow?
It is no secret that the great thinkers and scientists of Ancient China created many of the technologies which still affect our lives today. But what Dr. Gary Schwartz, Professor of East Asian History at San Francisco State University, reveals in his 2017 essay “The Genius of Ancient China: Challenges and Surprises" is that the Chinese have invented more than just the technologies we recognize them for.
According to Dr. Schwartz, Ancient China was a veritable bohemeth of scientific and technological experimentation. Even in the earliest known evidence of Chinese science and innovation––dating back to the Neolithic period of the Huang He Valley––the Chinese had already developed surprisingly sophisticated tools, weapons, and domesticated plants for food, medicine, and fiber. From this early period, the Chinese developed a vast array of practical, everyday items that are still in use today.
One of the most pervasive and influential inventions of Ancient China is the compass. Also known as the “south pointing chariot” due to its use as a navigation device for carriages, the Chinese compass was an indispensable tool for merchants, sailors, and traders of the day. It was also a major influence on early astronomical research, as the Chinese used the tool to chart and chart the skies. The Chinese also developed a writing system using symbols and symbols borrowed from other cultures, allowing them to record information in an easily accessible format.
Far beyond mere tools, the Chinese made remarkable breakthroughs in other scientific fields. Inventions such as the seismograph, used to detect and measure earthquakes, and the differential gear, which allowed for the creation of increasingly complex machines, are just a few examples of the incredible feat of engineering that the Chinese attained.
Additionally, advances in papermaking and printing allowed the Chinese to create books efficiently, allowing access to knowledge and information to a much wider audience than ever before. As they explored the world around them, they shared their knowledge with these new generations of readers, paving the way for longevity and the passage of ideas across cultures – an ability that would impact our current world profoundly.
Just as impressive as the scientific and technological advances of Ancient China are their accomplishments in the field of medicine. Despite the limited scientific knowledge of their day, the Chinese managed to develop effective means of treating a number of diseases and afflictions. They developed several herbs and herbal compounds to reduce pain, regulate hormones, and strengthen the immune system. In fact, physicians of Ancient China were among the first to describe the phenomenon of allergies, suggesting natural treatments to their patients.

One of the most famous Chinese medical discoveries is acupuncture, a form of therapeutic massage which involves the careful insertion of needles into certain areas of the body in order to help stimulate the flow of energy and alleviate pain and inflammation. Still popular in many parts of the world today, acupuncture has been practiced in China for centuries and is widely believed to be an effective form of preventive medicine.
These accomplishments, both big and small, are the legacies of Ancient China, and a testament to their groundbreaking achievements in the fields of science and technology. It is no wonder, then, that many look to Ancient China as an example of how to use innovation and discovery to shape our world.
