Exploring Ancient Chinese Thoughts and Ideologies

Throughout history, Chinese thought and philosophies have been among the most influential in the world. From the legal code under the philosopher Confucius to the political philosophies of the imperial Qin dynasty, Chinese thought has shaped the language, laws, and government systems of much of East Asia. The Tao

Tao, or the “Way” is the fundamental principle of Chinese thought, and lies at the heart of all Chinese ideologies. Translated literally, Tao means “course” or “path” and the central philosophy of Taoism is to go with the path of nature and the universe. Tao teaches that the universe is a harmonious whole, and believers strive to acquire knowledge and understanding of Tao and the universe in order to be in harmony with it. Taoists believe that by adhering to the precepts of Tao, they will ultimately lead towards an ideal state of harmony and balance.

Confucianism

Confucianism is an ethical system, based upon the teachings of the philosopher Confucius. This system of thought has been hugely influential throughout Chinese history, and even today provides a core source of values for many living in East Asian countries.

At the centre of Confucian thought is the concept of Ren, or moral righteousness. Ren is the idea of understanding and respecting community and familial relationships in order to build a harmonious society. It is important to recognize the wisdom of people and entities that represent a community or family, and to uphold their values as a sign of respect.

Confucianism also maintains the idea of reciprocity, or a system of obligations between oneself, family and community. One of the key ideas of Confucianism is to provide services to one’s family and community, and to maintain an attitude of respect towards others.

Legalism

Legalism was the dominant political ideology of the Qin dynasty, the first unified Chinese empire. Legalism was based upon the idea that the best way to govern a state was through strict legal codes and a system of rewards and punishments. This was seen as the most effective way to maintain order and harmony in society. The core idea of legalism was that strict laws and harsh punishments would serve as a deterrent for wrongdoing in society.

The focus of legalism was on the effectiveness of the laws and their enforcement, rather than on morality and ethics. This was in stark contrast to the other ideologies discussed here, which placed a strong emphasis on morality and respect. Legalism is seen by many as a precursor to modern legal systems, and was hugely influential in shaping Chinese thought and culture.

Buddhism

Buddhism was introduced to China in the 2nd century CE, and has had a strong influence on Chinese thought ever since. The central idea of Buddhism is that of suffering, and the belief that life is full of suffering and death is inevitable. Therefore, believers strive to live life in accordance with the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, in order to attain enlightenment and ultimately escape from the cycle of suffering.

Buddhism has been hugely influential throughout China, and the idea of seeking enlightenment and balance within the universe has become an integral part of Chinese thought. Even today, many Chinese people strive to live their day-to-day life according to Buddhist teachings.
