Investigating the Abundant Water Resources of China

Investigating the Abundant Water Resources of China

Have you ever wondered how much water resources are present in China? China, one of the world’s most populous countries, has a vast amount of water resources. It is estimated that China has around 2, at least 2,2 trillion cubic meters of renewable water resources. This figure amounts to about 2.8% of all renewable water resources in the world.

China is a large country, with a land area of about 9.6 million square kilometers and a population of around 1.4 billion people. This population is highly dependent on the availability of abundant fresh water sources in order to meet their daily needs. As a result, a great deal of attention has been given to the investigation and use of China’s water resources.

For the purpose of their investigations, China divides its water resources into four major categories:

  • River and Stream Water
  • Ground Water
  • Lake and Reservoir Water
  • Glacier and Snow Resources

It is estimated that about 84% of the total water resources of China comes from rivers and streams, with the remaining 16% consisting of ground and surface water sources. Ground water resources are mainly used for agriculture and industrial purposes, while rivers and streams provide the majority of water for drinking and other domestic needs.

Lakes and reservoirs play an important role in water resources in China. Lake and Reservoir water is used mainly for irrigation and other agricultural purposes, but they are also used for flood control and tourism. Glaciers and snow resources are mainly used for hydropower generation, also serving as a source of water for drinking and industrial purposes.

The Chinese government has implemented numerous projects over the years in order to better manage the country’s water resources. These projects have included the conservation of existing water sources, the promotion of efficient water use and the development of new sources of water. The Three Gorges Dam is a prime example of these projects.

Another noteworthy project undertaken in China is the South-North Water Transfer Project. This massive investment is intended to bring about 1,4 billion cubic meters of water annually from the lower Yangtze River to the dry northern cities of Beijing and Tianjin. This project, which is scheduled for completion in the year 2020, will help to ensure adequate drinking water supplies for the population on the northern part of the country.

The Chinese government has also taken measures to promote the use of renewable energy sources, such as hydropower, and to reduce water pollution. It has also increased public awareness of water conservation and undertaken various programs to protect and improve water resources.
