Tracing the Spread of Ancient Chinese Languages

For centuries, Chinese people have travelled in search of trading opportunities and new opportunities. As they have spread across the globe, they have also spread their language and culture, often establishing robust Chinese communities in their new home countries.

The Chinese diaspora has certainly left its mark on the world. The largest student populations at some of the world's most prestigious universities, for example, are comprised of mostly Chinese students. In recent years, the growth of Chinese language tourism has also helped to spread the language, culture and history of China far and wide, with many people now taking the opportunity to learn Mandarin in various countries around the world.

Nowadays, Chinese culture and language continues to remain a powerful influence in the East. In particular, the Chinese writing system and its characters are still widely used in countries such as Japan and Korea, and even the Vietnamese language retains some aspects of Chinese script.

The lasting impact of ancient Chinese language does not only exist in international relations and Asian countries though. Thanks to the work of dedicated language enthusiasts, ancient Chinese languages and writing systems are now also present in places as far away as Europe and the United States, with Chinese characters used in university lectures and multi-language public signage adorning many of the world's major cities.
