Understanding the Influence of Chinese Art and Design
Understanding the Influence of Chinese Art and Design
The influence of Chinese art and design can be seen in many aspects of modern culture, including the fashion and lifestyle industries, innovator product design and even cutting-edge contemporary art. What is it that makes China’s legacy of art and design so unique and significant? How have diverse Chinese art movements enriched the current design landscape, both in China and internationally?
As an ancient civilization with more than 5,000 years of history, China has a wealth of inspiration for modern art and design. While you may immediately think of the spectacular Great Wall of China, the fascinating fables of Chinese literature, or the intricate deceptions and visual artistry of ancient Chinese architecture, there is so much more to Chinese heritage that influences the current design language.

For instance, the Wuxing system - a school of thought from ancient China - which incorporated the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water to explain the philosophy and understanding of the universe, is a great source of exploration for designers. This system adopted yin/yang philosophy and remains a primary source of inspiration for Chinese painters, sculptors, and practicing artists.
Moreover, traditional calligraphy, one of the great achievements of Chinese art, is often used to convey a message and has had a considerable influence on modern art and design. The skillful Chinese brush that is used to carve poetic Chinese characters and delicate brush strokes is not only appreciated within highly-respected historical artwork but is also a main element of traditional Chinese painting.
The folk art of Chinese paper cutting is yet another source of inspiration. Traditionally used for decorating windows and doors for special occasions and festivals, it also has been adopted as a form of Art Nouveau in modern society to emphasize expressions of freedom and joy. The cut-outs created by paper cutting often contain symbolic themes reflecting complex traditional Chinese myths and legends.

Furthermore, Chinese culture also has legacy through fashion and costume design. Garments from traditional Chinese opera, for example, feature remarkable flowing robes that are widely adapted into the world of fashion and beauty. The Qipao (Cheongsam), a traditional Chinese dress dating back to the 17th Century, epitomizes this trend, widely used as an item of clothing for special events as well as a fashion garment.
In conclusion, understanding traditional Chinese art and design elements is an important part of the creative process for many designers and artists. From Chinese calligraphy, folk art, and story-telling to fashion, modern Chinese design exemplifies the unique legacy of Chinese culture.
